Youth Sports:
Sport Science International, a Lansing, New York sport psychology firm, has produced a 5 Disc sequence on Youth Sports. The contents are based on 57-videotaped interviews with players, parents, graduates, a medical doctor who specializes in sports medicine, and educators. A 6 Disc contains information about child growth and development aspects of Youth Sports competition by Professor Stephen Hamilton, Cornell University, and his graduate student Nicole Ja. By viewing the discs, athletes, parents, league officials, coaches and sport fans will receive first hand knowledge about important aspects of sport participation for boys and girls, ages 5 -13 yrs. Stephen Colt, Director of Recreation and Parks for the town of Lansing, NY, introduces the various modules on Youth Sport. A brief summary of the contents of each disc is present below.
DVD #1: The Athletes ($29.95)
Players, ages 5 -13 yrs, discus such important topics as: equal playing time, leadership style of coaches, girls on boy’s teams, treatment of game officials, feedback from coaches, the importance of practice, and other important dimensions of Youth Sports participation. The focus is on why boys and girls play and how they want their parents to behave when they come to games.
DVD #2: The Parents ($29.95)
The parents of players discuss important aspects of Youth Sports participation, e.g., the importance of winning, why they encourage their children to play, travel teams, one or several sports/year, academic requirements, sandlot vs. adult run sports. The central focus is to provide an overview of parental attitudes toward Youth Sports participation for their children.
DVD #3: The Graduates ($29.95)
Former Youth Sport athletes reflect on their playing experiences. The central focus is on how participation in Youth Sports has affected their lives. What important Life lessons were learned through Youth Sports participation? Graduates also answer such important questions as: How important was winning? Is it best to specialize in one sport for the entire year or is it best to play several sports? What kinds of coaches did you like best? Do you favor giving equal playing time to each boy and girls?
DVD #4: The Educators ($29.95)
The contents of this DVD are based on videotaped interviews with leading educators from various colleges and universities. They were asked to reply to the question: How do you feel about the way in which Youth Sports are being conducted in America today? Comments by physicals educators, psychologists, sport psychologists, and directors of interscholastic and intercollegiate athletics vary depending on the particular philosophy and orientation of the speakers. We are certain that you will find their comments interesting, informative and thought provoking.
DVD #5: Injury Perspectives ($29.95)
Andrew Getzin, M.D., presents important information about injuries in Youth Sports. As a former collegiate and professional athlete, Dr. Getzin covers such important topics as: common injuries, growth plate displacement, sudden death syndrome, Osgood Schlatter disease, and other topics of interest and importance to Youth Sport athletes and their parents. According to Dr. Getzin, athletes must get sufficient rest so that recovery can take place. To avoid injury, sport skills should be executed according to sound biomechanical principles. Pre-season conditioning of the right type and intensity is also of major importance.

Power Sleep for Athletes, by James B Maas PhD ($29.95)
Dr Maas, professor of psycholgy, Cornell University, is a noted sleep authority. In this DVD he covers such important topics as (a) the importance of sleep, (b) insomnia, (c) academic performance and sleep, (d) imagery and sleep, and (e) learning while asleep. Dr. Maas is a strong proponent of 'power napping' and the use of visualization to enhance athlete performance. This DVD's content is vital to the success of athletes who have not given careful consideration to the role of sleep in helping them reach their individual and team goals.
Child Growth and Development Perspectives ($29.95)
Stephen Hamilton, Ph.D., Cornell professor of child development and associate provost, and his graduate student Nicole Ja present information for this DVD. Ms. Ja is a former collegiate tennis player who has worked extensively with young boys and girls in camp environments. Dr. Hamilton is a former collegiate football player who has coached Youth Sport teams. They answer such important questions as: Is participation in Youth Sports harmful?
